Barbour, the very British waxed canvas

The Barbour brand was born over a century ago in England, in the port city of South Shields. Although it is now a luxury brand, its origins are rooted in a much less glamorous world: that of dockers and sailors. In the late 1890s, they coated their cotton clothes with fish fat to better protect themselves against the cold. This practice did not escape John Barbour, who founded his brand in 1894. He took up this concept and offered professionals jackets made of imported oilcloth coated with oil, and later wax, presented under the name of "wax jackets". The success of these accessories was resounding and the brand quickly gained national fame. The founder's son, Malcolm Barbour, accompanied his father in the development of the company, which changed its name to become J. Barbour and Sons at the beginning of the 20th century. Little by little, the brand convinced more and more professionals, from the English military to the agricultural community, including hunters and fishermen, as soon as the oil was replaced by wax, which has a much less strong odor. Over time, Barbour products diversified: leather goods, shoes, accessories, more and more people were attracted to this brand. Initially associated with manual trades, it eventually conquered the British aristocracy, and even the royal family wore Barbour jackets in the 1980s. Little by little, the street appropriated this reference, so much so that the brand acquired an international reputation at the end of the 1990s. The "Barbour jacket" is now cited by many people around the world to designate any waxed jacket. The brand has three iconic models, The Beaufort, The Border and The Bedale. These remain in dark tones, between khaki, blue and brown. However, the brand has teamed up with other designers, including Paul Smith, Land Rover and Engineered Garments to market other types of products.
